We here at AM Custom Tackle, Inc. are continuously running into one particular problem. That problem being excess oil. Oil is an excellent lubricant, but excess oil can do great damage to a fishing reel.
Reels need grease in many places to protect from excess wear. Oil will thin and reduce the lubrication qualities of grease. Most man made greases will not blend with natural oil, and most greases used in reels are man made.
We see reels come into the shop with no grease at all inside, just flooded with oil. The wear and tear on reels is very evident. Metal filings in the excess oil tell the truth. We have seen reels that had to be drained before we could get them apart.
Grease is another problem. We suggest you use a quality grease, not one you would use in a car. Just because it comes recommended by a friend, doesn’t mean its a good product or will protect your valuable equipment. Also, a little grease goes a long way. Vaseline is not a lubricant for metal parts. it also becomes runny in hot weather and stiff in cold weather.
Just to give you an idea, the lubricant we use at AM Custom Tackle, Inc. costs us about $20.00 per pound wholesale. We blend our own oil from different viscosity’s to achieve our goal. It is costly also, but worth the effort.
